Former Baldwin High standout Jojo Dickson would have liked to play for the University of Hawaii, but didn't get an offer from UH until he had committed to Idaho.

Hawaii's loss has turned out to be Idaho's gain. Dickson earned second-team all-WAC honors after registering 73 tackles and two interceptions as a linebacker for the Vandals.

Idaho, a traditional WAC doormat, posted a 7-5 mark this season to earn a berth in the Humanitarian Bowl against Bowling Green.

UH center John Estes, receiver Greg Salas and linebacker Blaze Soares were named to the first-team, with offensive tackle Aaron Kia selected to the second squad.

UFC: BJ Penn of Hilo will defend his UFC lightweight world title against Diego Sanchez of New Mexico on Saturday in Memphis. The bout will be the main event of the UFC 107 mixed martial arts card at the FedEx Forum. Penn is 14-5-1, including 11-1-1 as a lightweight (155 pounds) fighter. His only loss as a lightweight came in 2002. Sanchez is 21-2. He was once a welterweight title contender, but dropped to the lightweight division this year. The bout will be aired on PPV at a price of $46.99.

GOLF: Tadd Fujikawa has been granted a sponsor's exemption to play in the 2010 Sony Open. The tournament will be held Jan. 11 to 17 at Waialae Country Club with the 72-hole tournament teeing off Jan. 14 to 17. Fujikawa, who turns 19 on Jan. 8, made golf history in the 2007 Sony Open in Hawai'i when he became the youngest amateur in nearly 50 years to make the cut in a PGA Tour event. He vaulted as high as eighth before finishing in a tie for 20th. Months later, Fujikawa turned pro. In 2009, Fujikawa again captivated the state when he shot an 8-under 62 — tying a course record — in the third round. He eventually finished in a tie for 32nd place.

VOLLEYBALL: The third-ranked, but 12th-seeded Rainbow Wahine volleyball team advanced to this week's NCAA regional at Stanford. But getting out of Los Angeles wasn't easy.

Hawaii had to overcome a mid-match letdown Saturday against No. 15 host USC for a hard-earned 25-20, 25-18, 16-25, 27-25 victory.

Leading the way for Hawaii, was sophomore All-American Kanani Danielson with 23 kills. Danielson had 17 kills in a sweep of New Mexico in Friday's tournament opener.

The Rainbow Wahine will take a mark of 30-2, including 27 straight wins, versus fifth-seeded Illinois, which is 26-5.

COLLEGE GRID: Hawaii will be home for the holidays, but the Bows will have to watch their hometown bowl game from the stands after being taken apart, 51-10, by Wisconsin on Saturday night. Instead, Nevada will face SMU, led by ex-UH coach June Jones, in the Dec. 24 Hawaii Bowl at Aloha Stadium.

Alabama dominated Florida in the SEC title game, setting up a BCS title showdown with Texas. Three other teams ended the regular season with unbeaten records: TCU, Boise State and Cincinnati.

UH HOOPS: Not since the 1971-72 season had a Hawaii basketball player registered a 20-20 game, and the person who last accomplished that feat was Bob Nash, now the head coach at his alma mater.

Petras Balocka finished with 20 points and 20 rebounds as Hawaii ended a four-game losing streak with a 96-78 win over Lamar on Sunday. Roderick Flemings scored 22 for the Bows and Hiram Thompson contributed nine points and eight assists as UH improved its record to 3-4 while dropping Lamar to 3-6.

Yesterday's contest was the first in a nine-game homestand for the Bows, who will host Division-II Chaminade on Wednesday.

PREP FOOTBALL: Kamehameha defeated Kahuku 34-21 in the Division-I title game and Iolani claimed its third straight D-II crown by beating Kauai High 24-17. Friday's championship double-header drew a crowd of more than 21,000 to Aloha Stadium.
